Louis Theodore Gouvy (1819-1898) was a French composer and conductor. He was born in Goffontaine-lès-Thionville, France and began his musical studies at a young age. He studied piano with Franz Liszt and composition with Pierre Zimmermann.
Gouvy's music is sometimes described as a blend of Germanic and French traditions. He wrote in a variety of genres, including symphonies, chamber music, opera, and choral works. His music was well-respected during his lifetime, with performances by famous conductors such as Hans von Bülow and Édouard Colonne.
Despite his success, Gouvy struggled to gain recognition in France due to his Germanic influences and his refusal to conform to the prevailing musical tastes of his time. He was also Jewish, which may have made it more difficult for him to gain acceptance in French society.
Gouvy died in Leipzig, Germany and was buried in the cemetery of his hometown. In recent years, there has been renewed interest in his music and efforts to bring it to a wider audience.
